I went to see Willy Wonka the other day on the IMAX screen. Visually the movie was very impressive but overall I was disappointed. I LOVE the original with Gene Wilder. I did not expect this one to be a perfect copy but at the same time I did expect stupid changes. The most glaring the Veruca Salt storyline. In the original (and in the book) she demands that her father buy her one of Willy's golden egg laying geese and ends up in the trash with the other "bad eggs". In the new movie, the geese are now squirrels and the golden eggs are nuts. Did Tim Burton not see the metaphor here or more disturbing, did he not think today's child would get it.....
Also missing was the scene where Charlie and his Grandpa Joe end up floating to the ceiling fans and must burp to get down. I really liked this scene and helped relate Charlie more as a child than a saint. The Charlie is the new movie is just to perfect. Annoyingly so in fact. So I say stick with the original, even Johnny Depp can't save this one.
Next up is Sky High, which Wayne and I will see on Wednesday. I have high hopes for this one.
